Welcome to Germany
– Your relocation guide

The housing market is tight in many cities. To successfully find an apartment, you should start your search early and have all your documents ready.

Unfurnished apartments are completely empty – without lamps, curtains, washing machines, dryers, or built-in closets. Rental agreements in Germany are usually open-ended and can be terminated with three months’ notice. The security deposit is up to three months’ rent. In addition to the base rent, there are also additional costs.
We support you in your search for an apartment, organize viewing appointments and application documents, and explain contracts.

You must register with the Residents’ Registration Office within 14 days of moving. There you will receive your registration certificate.
After registering, you will be sent your personal tax identification number, which is necessary for work, banking, and the tax office.

Every dog must be registered with the local authority. Dog tax is payable, and in many states microchipping and insurance are compulsory.

We advise you on the exact rules in your place of residence, organize all the necessary documents, and accompany you to appointments.

Non-EU driver’s licenses must usually be converted to a German driver’s license within 6 months. Depending on the country of origin, the theory test and/or practical test may need to be retaken.

We will review the requirements for you and assist you with the application process.

You are required to have health insurance during your stay in Germany. To ensure that you are covered at all times, it is important to have continuous insurance coverage—otherwise, you may incur high additional payments. You have three options:

  • Statutory health insurance (GKV)
  • Private health insurance (PKV) with a German or international company
  • Combination of GKV and PKV supplementary insurance

We provide you with comprehensive information about the German health insurance system and connect you with our network of independent insurance advisors.

A checking account is almost indispensable in Germany, especially if you are staying for a longer period of time. Your salary will be transferred to a German account, and many everyday matters—such as rent, cell phone contracts, or electricity bills—are paid through it.

EC and debit cards are used more frequently than credit cards. To open an account, you will usually need your passport or identity card and a registration certificate. We can help you open an account and advise you on banks that offer services in English.

In Germany, school attendance is compulsory from the age of 6. After primary school, children attend different secondary schools. Most schools are state-run and free of charge. Private and international schools can be found in most large cities. However, these schools charge fees.

For children with no knowledge of German, there are special German language courses available starting in elementary school.
We are happy to help you find the right school, accompany you to appointments, and take care of important formalities.

Germany has a dense network of underground trains, suburban trains, trams, buses, regional and long-distance trains (RB, RE, IC, ICE), and long-distance buses. The infrastructure is particularly well developed in cities. Ticket prices vary depending on the region and route. Tickets can be purchased at bus and train stations, at stops, and online.

The Deutschlandticket has been available since 2023. It currently costs €58/month and is valid throughout Germany for local transport (buses, subways, regional trains, etc.). Long-distance trains (IC, ICE) are excluded.
